How to Keep Your Pool Safe this Summer

If it were up to me, we would be out of a job. We never want to see anyone get seriously injured, and every case that we handle is a reminder of just how easily a normal day can suddenly become the day that changes the rest of your life. From driving to work to enjoying a sunny afternoon at the pool, almost everything that we do carries a risk that someone else will cause us harm.

With this sobering reminder as a backdrop, as summer gets into full swing, we wanted to take a moment to remind all of the pool owners in Palm Beach County some of the steps that they can take to make their pools safer places for their families, friends, and guests. Here are our top five tips for keeping your pool safe in the Summer of 2016:

Five Tips for Pool Safety

Tip # 1: Secure Your Enclosure.

All pool areas should be surrounded by secure enclosures to prevent children from being able to get in the water unsupervised. Replace broken fencing, fix any holes in your screened enclosure, and be sure to lock up to help prevent avoidable accidents.

Tip # 2: Clean Up.

Lounge chairs, floats, noodles, toys, plates and glasses – these are all essential pool gear, but they can also be hazards that can lead to unexpected slips and falls. For safety, keep these and other items away from the edge of the pool, and be sure to clean up any spills, broken glass, wet leaves, and other potential hazards promptly.

Tip # 3: Clean Out.

In addition to cleaning up around the pool, you should clean up in the pool, as well. You want to be sure to keep your pool clear of anything that could present a choking hazard, as well as anything that might sink to the bottom and be attractive to young children.

Tip # 4: Monitor Children at All Times.

When children are swimming, they should be monitored at all times. In addition, children who are not proficient swimmers should be made to wear age-appropriate floats or life jackets. During parties, make sure that there are enough parents around to keep an eye on all of the children in the pool.

Tip # 5: Have First Aid Available.

Finally, when you own a pool, it is always a good idea to have at least a basic first aid kit available. Pool owners in Florida should also consider becoming certified in CPR.

Of course, even these steps will not prevent all pool accidents; and, when pool accidents happen, owners will often be liable for the victims’ losses. We wish you a safe, fun-filled summer; and, who knows? Maybe we’ll even see you poolside if we get the opportunity for a little rest and relaxation.
